After Overseeing Hollywood Movies Such as X-Men and Star Wars, Scott Neeson Quit Everything to Support Marginalized Kids

👋Have you ever heard 👂of the Steung Meanchey garbage dump🗑️ in Cambodia🇰🇭, also called Smokey 💨Mountain? Until 2009, hundreds of children👩‍💼👨‍💼 were picking through garbage to sell for recycling♻️ on this 6-hectare dumping ground. It was one of the most toxic☣️ environments imaginable. Since 2004, the Cambodian Children’s Fund (CCF) has been fighting to transform impoverished kids into tomorrow’s leaders👨‍💼👩‍💼.

I would be surprised 😯if you have never heard of🎥 X-Men, Star Wars, Braveheart or Titanic. The man behind them is Scott Neeson, former President of 🎞️20th Century Fox International. Before starting a new role at Sony in 2003, he took a 5-week🧳✈️ trip to Cambodia🇰🇭, where he discovered children🎞️👨👧 working everywhere on that garbage dump. He could not let that go. One year later, he sold his fancy cars🚗, yacht🛥️ and house 🏠to relocate to Phnom Penh and started the Cambodian Children’s Fund.

CCF aims🎯 to provide best-in-class education 👩‍🏫to marginalized children living near the dumping 🗑️ground. Their outreach teams 🌟create the right environment for education, with support for basic needs such as housing🏠, food🍏 and health⚕️. Then, they provide access to their own primary and secondary schools 🏢with one objective: support students all the way to university 💪and make sure they can become the leaders of tomorrow👩‍💼👨‍💼.

Their secondary school is impressive🌟. It looks like a top-tier private school🏢, but it is located in the middle of one of the poorest areas in the country🇰🇭. Since its🚀 inception, they have trained 💪😀1,898 students, provided 461 homes and distributed 45 tons of rice at a heavily subsidized price.

The Futures Factory, an NGO Led Shopping Center For Social Enterprises in Cambodia

✌️As you know, I travelled 🌏this summer🌞 to Cambodia 🇰🇭for a full immersion with Friends International, a leading social enterprise🚀 saving😀 lives and building⚒️ futures for the most marginalized children 👦👧in Southeast Asia. Their secret sauce is brilliant🌟: they build social enterprises to teach 👨‍🏫young people practical & soft skills in promising industries🍴💇‍♂️, before helping them find a job 💼across the country.

Friends International created multiple social enterprises: garages🏍️, restaurants🍴, hairdressers💇‍♂️, electrical services🌟, beauty salons❇️, apparel shops👚… They were a real success🌟 with the expat community. However, Friends International’s mission🚀 went further. They wanted to involve every stakeholder in their adventure, including locals. To meet their goals🎯, they had to create a customer experience equivalent to that of regular shopping🛍️ centers.

They took up the challenge and opened🔓 the Futures Factory 🛍️, a melting pot of creativity🖍️, social enterprise🚀 and community collaboration👋. Customers can find all the Friends International shops, services and restaurants 🍴, as well as traditional cafés☕ and eco-friendly, socially responsible shops🏪. The experience is stunning! 👍Families can enjoy concerts, activities and shopping while, at the same time, young people from the most marginalized communities are trained for promising jobs😀.

Darong Transferred 5 schools for Deaf and Blind Children to the Ministry of Education in Cambodia

✌️We met Darong Chour, director of the 🚀NGO☀️ Krousar Thmey, a leading NGO based in Cambodia 🇰🇭supporting blind and deaf children👨👧. The adventure started because, in the 1990s, there was no infrastructure🏗️ to support blind and deaf children.

Education 👨‍🏫was the key🗝️ priority. To make sure children got a proper education👨‍🎓, the team developed a Khmer version of Braille📒, started teaching sign☦️ language and translated the entire Cambodian curriculum. And it worked really well!💪🙂

We met Darong a few weeks after a major announcement📣. After 30 years of co-development with the Cambodian government, the government approved✔️ the transfer 🤗of their 5 schools👨‍🎓 for blind and deaf children, including more than 200 teachers👨‍🏫👩‍🏫, to the Ministry of Education. This year, more than 300 blind and 750 deaf children 😀🏆🚀are supported by Krousar Thmey.

Friends International Is Convinced About The Benefits Of Tech and Aims At Being Fully Digitalized

👋After completing our mission 🚀at Friends International, which was to support 🤝the identification and implementation of a recruitment platform to ensure the matching 🔥/ tracking🔎 of hundreds of beneficiaries👦👧, we shared our report📄. We recommended the implementation of two integrated solutions🖥️: Oscar and Salesforce. What we really appreciated was their genuine desire to digitalize all their programs. We had interesting conversations about the implementation of these solutions, team training, the recruitment of their future IT lead / CTO💻, cost 👛optimization…

In general, we have noticed that many NGOs see digitalization as a powerful 💪way to create a sustainable 🚀competitive advantage (centralized data💿 collection, automated reports📄, real-time information ℹ️…). At the same time, the range of available solutions is growing📈. Companies like Salesforce have created specific packages for NGOs, startups are developing dedicated SaaS solutions, and some NGOs have partnered 🤲 to share the costs of developing a 🌠common tech solution…

Moussa Trains the Next Generation of Entrepreneurs To Fight For Social Integration

✌️In sensitive 💥urban areas in France🇨🇵, the unemployment rate is twice📈 the national average. For Moussa, economic integration is the cornerstone of social success🚀. In 2015, Moussa launched Les Déterminés, a mission-driven🌠 NGO🌠 that supports entrepreneurs from sensitive💥 urban and rural areas.

Self-taught👨‍🏫 and resolutely audacious, Moussa started his career as an entrepreneur in the telecom ☎️industry at 21. Without support 💁or a network🕸️, he discovered how hard⛰️ it was to create a company. At the same time, he saw countless young talents👦 full of ambition and energy 💪but lacking the skills, knowledge and network to launch a successful business.

To fight for a brighter☀️ future in sensitive 💥areas, Moussa sees entrepreneurship as a powerful weapon. Les Déterminés is a free 🆓program for young entrepreneurs, with an application process 100% based on determination💪😀. It provides personalized training around 2 main pillars: knowledge and network.

Within 4 years, Les Déterminés has trained 10 cohorts of entrepreneurs across 5 French départements✌️😀. After this successful milestone, Moussa now aims to scale🚀 the program nationally. Do you know why none of the 144 participants dropped out before completion? Because they are Determined🌠!

  • Benoit Created The Khmer Braille For Blind Children In Cambodia

Benoit Created The Khmer Braille For Blind Children In Cambodia

👋Do you know the life ⚕️expectancy of a Cambodian🇰🇭 child becoming blind in the 90’s ? 2 years! 😢Benoit is the founder👨‍💼 of Krousar Thmey (“New Family”) a leading NGO 🚀based in Cambodia supporting blind and deaf children👦👧. Becoming blind or deaf in Cambodia was like a death ☠️sentence because there was neither support nor infrastructure🏢 to address those problems🔃. Most of them were left behind or hidden in houses🏠.

Benoit started his career 💼as a financial controller at Accor Hotel🏢 in Bangkok🇹🇭. He had a comfortable 🛋️and hassle-free life😀. However, everything changed in the early nineties when he visited a Cambodian refugee 🏚️camp in the eastern part of Thailand. Shocked😲 by the living conditions, he quit everything to launch🌠 Krousar Thmey 🌠and support Cambodian refugees in Thailand.

After the peace 🏳️agreement, he relocated to Cambodia 🇰🇭to support abandoned children👦 with a focus on blind and deaf children. Education 👩‍🏫was the key priority. To face that challenge⛰️, they developed a Khmer version of braille and they started teaching sign language. After huge efforts💦, Benoit opened schools🔠 across the whole country and employed up to 🚀400 staff.

This year, 2700 children have been supported by Krousar Thmey 😀😀including 300 young blind and 750 deaf children✌️. Today, they can be extremely proud because after almost 30 years of co-development with the Cambodian government, the prime minister of Cambodia👨‍💼 agreed to take responsibility for all the schools and teachers, the entire structure being transferred to the ministry of education👩‍🏫. It is a major success😋, a great example of real development being achieved with a national programme of education being started and developed by a private NGO 👍and being transferred to the government, which is now in charge of the continuation of those schools.

To Fight Pollution and Sanitation Issues, Odgerel Is Building Sustainable Community Infrastructures

🙌Why do Hundreds of Children 👦👧die 😥every year in the Ger Areas around Ulan Bator in Mongolia🇲🇳?

There are two major issues💥: Heavy pollution 🏭& Sanitation ⚕️issues due to the absence of public infrastructures🏨. 60% of the Ulan Bator population👨 live in Ger Areas which are disorganized housing🏘️ areas built with very limited urbanization facilities (limited electricity access, no sewer…) People still need to use coal⛰️ heating, dig toilets🚽 on their small parcels… Can you imagine what is happening during winter, when hundreds of thousand people switch on their coal heating at the same time? 💨💨💨You can not even see 15 meters in front of you👓 because of the heavy smoke which is very dangerous ☢️for young children👶.

To fight⚔️ both challenges, Odgerel who is currently running a profitable company👔 selling & installing electrical portals decided to launch an NGO🌠🌠 called EcoTown which aims at building👷 sustainable community infrastructures. Due to the limited funding 💰access in Mongolia🇲🇳, Odgerel has made a choice. He is using the profits💵 he is making from his company to fully finance EcoTown😃.

To address the coal heating issue, Odgerel is developing🔎 new isolation materials in partnership with international 🌍universities 🎓to reduce coal consumption. On average, each family👨‍👨‍👦‍👦 consumes around 3 tons of coal per winter❄️. Regarding the lack of urbanization infrastructures, Odgerel is creating sustainable community models for the Ger area districts. For example, with his team, he had just finalized a community building where local people could meet, organize workshops, grow fruits 🍎& vegetables.

Based in Kibera🇰🇪, the largest urban slum in Africa, she wants to empower and teach younger kids👦👧. Belinda is 19 years old and the third of four children👨‍👨‍👧‍👦. When she was younger, she did not want to waste🙇 her time doing nothing. That is why she started playing football🏟️.

When she heard about Carolina for Kibera’s Queens team, she joined! CFK is a local 🌠NGO that uses sport 🌠as a powerful 💪tool to build community resilience and prevent violence💥. It builds social skills and establishes positive🌞 social norms that protect adolescents from negative influences.

Teachers 👨‍🏫are a cornerstone of our society. We all remember a great teacher who encouraged us during hard⛰️ times, who told us that we could make it, or who punished 😢us for a reason we only understood a few years later. They are true 😎💪heroes!

I will never forget my discussion with the head teacher of the Lindi School, located in a very poor slum. Surprisingly, this school was a haven of joy🌞 and cheerfulness🌈. After a warm welcome from 50 young & lively children👦👧 at the entrance gates👋, I had the chance to sit down for a few minutes with the head teacher. He shared some frightening figures🔢 with me: out of 200 children, only 2 had passed their final exams, and none of them could pay the high school fees. They had one book 📚for up to 10 children. He was struggling to pay💰 the other teachers’ salaries.
However, his mission 🚀has remained intact for the last 20 years: to do his best 💪to provide as much education👩‍🏫 as he can to his pupils. If he does not, no one will. I was really impressed😀🌠 by this man, who has been fighting 💥for more than 20 years and has never given up!

👋Have you already been on stage at the Olympia🎫? Sofiane did better than that. Last year, he brought a whole team of young artists💃 from Sport dans la Ville for a theatrical improvisation on stage at the Olympia in front of 2000 spectators. 😎✌️

With Sofiane, we met on the side of a football⚽ training of Sport dans la ville, 🌠an impactful NGO🌠 fighting for social & professional integration through Sport. After a school 👨‍🏫path in Trappes & a diploma in accountability, he discovered the challenges to start a career without network 📡and mentors👦. After several jobs in restauration, banking and insurance, he decided to get a fresh start with a purpose driven mission 🚀in the social sector. 3 years ago, he joined Sport dans la Ville as Insertion Manager. Sofiane currently ensures a personalized coaching for 90 young disadvantaged teenagers living in the suburbs of Saint Denis.😀 ✌️

👉One of the key factors of success for Sofiane was his passion♥️ for theatrical improvisation which enabled him to adapt himself to every situation. 👋How would you react if a 17 years old joyful girl👧 tells you that few years back, she wanted to kill☠️ herself because of her pregnancy👶? It was a Thursday at 5.30am. After a 20 minute walk across metal sheets barracks, Faith welcomed🙂 us in her tiny 12m2 family house🏠. While washing her daughter clothes, Faith described the discovery of her pregnancy after 7 months, the father’s refusal to recognize his twins, the rejection of her friends, the death of one of the twins & her desire to commit suicide…

But that was before! 😀🌠Then, she met with an impactful NGO called Carolina for Kibera which empowered her, gave her confidence back & supported her to go back to school.🚀 Her most important learning 👩‍🏫was to be able to say NO! She became an 🌠inspiring young woman🌠 fighting for her daughter. She told me: “I am working hard because I do not want my daughter to suffer” She also became class representative at school. What’s really struck me was when she took me aside before I left. She asked me support for one recurring challenge: sanitary napkins for her classmates. Her only request was not even for herself but for her classmates… 17 years old and she is already an inspiring leader!💪😀 .

Sarah and Her Impact-Driven Team Support 77,000 Disadvantaged People in Bulgaria

A few years back, Sarah would never have imagined launching the Trust for Social Achievement, a leading organization in Bulgaria with an ambitious vision: help Bulgaria’s most disadvantaged achieve educational & economic success. After working for a decade in large US institutions, she had the opportunity to conduct research on social inclusion in Bulgaria. Her lifetime mission became clear! In 2012, she founded the Trust for Social Achievement. With her team of 30 mission-driven employees, she focuses on developing innovative & data-driven approaches that increase self-sufficiency & improve life outcomes for Bulgaria’s poor, with a focus on the Roma. Here is one of their most impactful successes. They noticed that due to the lack of a national policy on kindergarten, only 45% of Roma 3–6-year-olds attended kindergarten, even though quality early education improves later school performance. Hand in hand with the World Bank’s team of experts, they conducted the first randomized controlled trial impact evaluation in 240 settlements with the help of 23 NGOs. Results were stunning! Thanks to a change in the law, welfare payments raised Roma kindergarten enrollment to 68%, and it should reach 85% once kindergarten fees are fully removed. A great example of how data-driven approaches can drive massive change across a country! https://socialachievement.org/en

    👋 Hi Everyone,

I had the chance🤩 to stay a week in Cuzco 🌎. Every morning, I used to go to El Mercado San Pedro 🛒for my breakfast 🍊. Imagine, hundreds of small shops selling similar products in a not only friendly 🤗 but also ultra-competitive 🏁 atmosphere. This is how I met with Fany at her small shop selling fruit juices 🍌🍍🍎. She was not pushy to make my buy, just a great & authentic smile 😄. In the morning, I was coming to get my fruit juice & exchange about our respective cultures 📚. Selling fruits on the market is clearly not very well paid 💰 but that was Fany’s job. Without complaining, she explained that she was doing all of that for her daughter 👩. She was fighting hard ⚔️ for her by getting up very early in the morning & trying to offer the best juice 🍹possible to her customers 👥. Bob – CEO of the largest East African company fighting hard for transparency

    Hi everyone,👋

Do you know Bob? 👋Bob is the CEO👨‍⚖️ of Safaricom🛰️, the largest company🏨 in East Africa. I met Bob in Nairobi🇰🇪 to discuss purpose💫, transparency & corruption. He is not only one of the most successful🚀 leaders in Kenya, but also an inspiring activist capitalist. For him, corruption is currently rampant💥 &, in the corporate world, it sets a bad example. Some business leaders😠 do not have the right compass, and success is frequently measured by how many farms🏡 and how many cars🚗 you own… In many ways, bad examples have been set for the younger generations. One of his first actions💡 as CEO was to bring more transparency by disclosing his net assets and income💰. The first year, nobody followed except a close friend👬. Sometimes doing the right thing requires a lot of 💫moral courage💫, even if there is a personal cost. However, those moves create change, and change drives progress. A few years back, there was no law against bribery in the private sector in Kenya. After a hard fight💥 for regulatory⚖️ change, Bob proposed a law📝 which has now been enacted. He said: “As CEO of the wealthiest company in the country, if we wanted to play the stupid corruption game🎲, we could afford to bribe more than anyone else. But the minute🕐 we get into that game, every small business in this country will have a bad future. I have to stand firm! I have zero tolerance for corruption”.

👉As a role model for the new generation, Bob advocates the 3 Ps: 🌠PURPOSE, 🌠PEOPLE and 🌠PROFIT. “The first thing to do is find your purpose, then find the right people around you, and finally focus on profit, otherwise you will not be able to afford all of that.” Do you know people like Bob?

Safaricom has been ranked Africa’s Best Employer by Forbes.

    👋👋Hi Everyone, 👋👋

Have you already met with Peggye? She is a mission driven, brilliant 🌠 and humble woman 👩 living in Paris 🇫🇷. Impressive story 📝! Peggye was born in a small village 🏠 of 34k inhabitants in the northern part of the Madagascar 🇲🇬 where 72% of the population live with less that $1 /day 💰. During colonialism, her grandfather👴 who was a farmer 👨‍🌾, had noticed that the common denominator of wealthy people was education 👨‍🏫. With his wife, they tighten their belt all their life to send their 8 children to University🎓. Unlike most other kids 👨‍👦‍👦 in her village, Peggye’s family always supported her psychologically and financially 💰 to succeed at school even if it was not always easy. However, after her first year in law school 📔, almost every university shut down due to an attempt coup to take over the existing government. She could have given up but she did not. At 19 years old, she decided to apply abroad thousands of kilometers 🌍 from her family 👨‍👨‍👧‍👦. Among tens of thousands of applicants, she received the Boutmy scholarship to join the prestigious school of Science Po in Paris 🇫🇷. With her degree in the pocket, she could have applied to best in class law firms with high paid salaries 💰 but it was not her mission. She decided to join a mission driven start up 🚀 called EPIC foundation which aims at fighting against social inequalities globally. In parallel, she is also very active in the community of Antalaha with the opening of a school for handicapped ♿ people with her family.

Her mission is to give a chance to every disadvantaged children 👦 and to convince them that they can also realize their dreams 🚀🚀! She has more than a mission. 👉👉🌠 Today, she is a role model for the overall community of Antalaha!🌠🌠

Have you met Peter? Peter is a young Kenyan 🇰🇪 leader with a BIG dream. He was born in the middle of Kibera, one of the largest African slum located in the south of Nairobi. Living in Kibera was his biggest challenge 💥 in life. He said: “You do not have dreams, you think you can not make it in life and you feel inferior”. It really affected him when he was young 🧒.
